Be careful when wearing large hats to the races, or male type hats like a trilby when out. Most of the time your hair will need to be put up off your neck and tucked into the hat to create clean lines around your hair line and face. If you wear your hair down, no matter how coiffured it will look as if your hair is unfinished or even dowdy.

I have not seen many women who can get away with it, but if you can … then hey, lucky you. The rule is then hair down small hat piece with flower or decoration, therefore the hair is seen larger than the hat and they then compliment each other. Long hair down with large hat it all just gets too busy and both looks are then competing.

Don’t be caught out thinking that you can hide any hair under your hat, unlike us gents as we can get away with it. It’s very unflattering if your hat comes off for whatever reason! Nine times out of ten it will come off during the night so have a reasonable back up look under the hat – you don’t have to spend hours at it, and if your hair is short then there’s even less preparation for you. I love seeing women in hats, either power look or regal.
